Comment periods on import rules extended

Produce_Assorted2_blogInterested parties will have more time to comment on two rules that will affect foods imported into the U.S.

Commonly called the foreign supplier rule and third party audit rule, the two rules are set to enhance the safety of imported foods, animal feed and ingredients by requiring producers in other countries to meet standards equivalent to those in the U.S. The third party audit rule also will create a mechanism for third-party audits to become accredited and, therefore, conduct food safety checks and issue certifications.

Comments on the rules, which were released in July, originally were due by Nov. 26, 2013. The new deadline is now Jan. 27, 2014.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) decided to lengthen the comment period so people and groups could evaluate their comments on the rules in conjunction with a recently released FSMA rule regarding preventive controls for pet food and animal feed.
