Frozen treats that don’t lead to “we all scream” on the scale

Ice cream is one of the best summer treats around, there’s no denying that. But with an ingredient list that includes cream and sugar, it isn’t exactly the healthiest treat. So where is one supposed to turn when looking for a delicacy in the hot summer months that won’t ruin your diet?

There’s actually a lot of at-home summer treats you can make to get your sweet tooth fix.

Sorbet is a basic dessert, just like ice cream, and as healthy as you want to make it. Sorbet consists of frozen water or juice that is then combined with pretty much whatever you want: fruit, chocolate, herbs or liquor or wine (for those who are old enough). Extra bonus to consider: this dessert doesn’t include any lactose, so it is a great choice for those who have an allergy or intolerance or who are vegan. Click here for a list of 15 recipes.

Popsicles aren’t just juice cubes frozen with toothpicks anymore: they’ve gone gourmet! Make a delicious smoothie using your favorite fruits and freeze. Or, make a yogurt popsicle. You can even cut up chunks of fruit, mix with juice and freeze to create diet-friendly  fruit pops.

If it has fruit, does that mean it's healthy?

Fudgesicles don’t necessary sound “healthy,” but consider this recipe that is soy-free, gluten-free and oil-free — it’s like the miracle treat (and, did we mention, great for vegans, too?). Get the recipe for black bean fudgesicles here.

But, if we’re being totally honest, sometimes nothing beats ice cream on a hot summer day. Relax, because there are DIY options you can make at home, too. Enjoy!
