Happy National Pet Week!

Give Rover and Fluffy some extra love this week – it’s National Pet Week!

This week is a time to not only celebrate pets and their contributions to our lives, but also to raise awareness of veterinary medicine and to highlight responsible pet ownership, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA).

The National Pet Week website has some great links for pet owners, from tips on animal health to choosing the right veterinarian.

But why celebrate our furry friends? Here are a few reasons:

  • Hanging out with pets can increase oxytocin levels in the brain, the hormone that reduces stress and imparts calmness, according to a 2009 study.
  • Need someone to talk to? Try your pets. Almost all pet owners do, which increases socialization (check out the above link for more).
  • They can help keep that New Year’s resolution. Pets provide additional opportunities for exercise, especially outdoors. Besides, who doesn’t love a good game of fetch?
  • The human-animal bond is incredibly strong. According to research, the majority of pet owners consider their pets to be part of the family.
