Preventive controls for animal feed comment period extended

dog foodThose who wish to comment on a proposed rule to enhance the safety of pet food and animal feed now have an extra month to do so.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) today announced the comment period on the rule, Current Good Manufacturing Practice and Hazard Analysis and Risk-Based Preventive Controls for Food for Animals, will now be open until March 31, 2014. It previously was set to close Feb. 26.

The extensions come after requests from interested groups to allow more time for the comments as the rules were new to the industry.

The proposed rule, which was released in October, was the fifth to come from the 2011 Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). It focuses on preventive measures to safeguard animal food from a myriad of concerns, including chemicals and pathogens. It also would mandate the implementation of good manufacturing processes currently used in the production of human food. It will be the first time a similar rule will apply to animal food.
