No rule publication dates yet, but details about FSMA rules continue to emerge

Curious about what’s going on with the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) rules? You’re in good company.

The food industry still is waiting for rules on imports, produce and preventative controls for human and animal food. And, with July 3 closing in as the date the preventative controls rules are slated to go into effect, there’s still uncertainty when the rules will appear.

The rules, and FSMA, aim to make the U.S. food safety system more proactive than reactive. It was signed into law by President Obama in Jan. 2011. It’s the most comprehensive overhaul to the U.S. food safety system since the early 20th century.

Although no formal dates for rule releases have been announced, some information has been released. In a recent blog post,  former Director of the FDA’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition and current partner at Leavitt Partners Dr. David Acheson sheds some light on what the industry can expect.
