Roses, chocolates and…dog treats? Americans treat their pets for Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day isn’t just for humans anymore. Pets also are slated to get lots of love today.

About 20 percent, or one in five, of Americans will buy Valentine’s Day presents for their pets, to the tune of roughly $815 million, according to a Survey from the National Retail Federation.

In all, Americans will drop about $18.6 billion on their sweethearts, friends, family, coworkers and, apparently, pets.

It’s not just dogs and cats reaping the sweet benefits of all of this love – horses, fish and other small animals also receive Valentine’s Day gifts, according to a survey from the American Pet Products Association and highlighted by USA Today.
